Job Creators Endorse Brenna Findley

July 27, 2010

Brenna Findley of Dexter, IA has been named a "Friend of Iowa Business" by the Iowa Industry PAC, the political action committee of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry. Findley is the Republican candidate for Attorney General of Iowa.

The Iowa Industry PAC evaluates candidates based on their ability to help create jobs in Iowa by supporting a competitive business climate. Criteria used to make the designations include the candidates' positions on issues of importance to job creators in Iowa.

"Brenna Findley has demonstrated a commitment to improve Iowa's business climate so that employers can create more jobs and grow the economy," said Michael Ralston, President of the Iowa Association of Business and Industry.

"Iowa needs an Attorney General who is a strong advocate for Iowa's economy and understands what it takes to create private sector jobs in every community and in every county," said Findley. "My background and experience have given me the understanding about what it takes to ensure Iowa is a family friendly state where jobs, opportunity and prosperity can thrive in every community. Small business is the engine for job growth-- my office will be small business friendly," she added.

The Iowa Association of Business and Industry (ABI) is comprised of approximately 1,400 companies employing more than 300,000 Iowans. As "The Voice of Iowa Business Since 1903", ABI works to enhance the Iowa business climate to foster growth and prosperity for Iowans. The Iowa Industry PAC is non-partisan and endorses both Republican and Democratic candidates for legislative offices. The committee encourages voters to consider the endorsements when evaluating which candidates will help bring jobs to Iowa when voting in the November 2nd general election.

AG MILLER NEEDS TO COME CLEAN IN SPENDING SCANDAL PDF Print E-mail

DEXTER, IA—Today, the Republican nominee for Attorney General, Brenna Findley, called upon Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller to explain to Iowa taxpayers why he advised Governor Culver that he could not fire Lynn Walding, Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division head. Walding was one of Miller’s top lieutenants in the Attorney General’s office before being appointed to head the Division.

State auditors have investigated the Alcoholic Beverages Division and found improper spending, including tens of thousands of dollars on artwork, leather chairs, bicycles, a camper and high-definition televisions, as well as other improprieties and mismanagement.

According to news reports, Attorney General Miller advised Governor Culver that he could not fire Walding in a legal memo. So far, Iowa’s Attorney General Tom Miller has not provided a copy of his legal memo.

"The Auditor's report not only highlighted severe deficiencies within the Culver Administration, but two glaring patterns that have become apparent with the AG's office:

First, Miller views his role as AG as one which has, as its primary role, sweeping Chet Culver’s messes under the rug. Why else would Miller sit on his memo and protect Walding from being fired for mismanagement? His 'go along to get along' mentality is not what Iowa taxpayers deserve. I'll change that attitude on Day One.

Second, Walding was one of Miller's top lieutenants prior to assuming control at Alcoholic Beverages Division. Miller's other "exports" to the Culver Administration have similarly become part of the problem, not the solution. Donn Stanley, another top Miller lieutenant who took a leave of absence from the AG’s office to manage Culver’s campaign, is now mired in a campaign finance controversy. It seems that in his desire to help salvage Chet Culver, Miller is dragging state government down with him,” noted Findley.

Tom Miller Does Too Little, Too Late...Again

June 1, 2010

DEXTER, IA -Today AG Tom Miller finally issued a legal answer well after it was needed in February. In February, eighteen state Senators asked Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller to review a report by State Auditor David Vaudt and issue an official legal opinion as to whether Governor Culver should produce a new proposed budget given that findings of the report shows his current proposal surpasses Iowa's statutory 99 percent spending limitation as addressed in Sections 8.21 and 8.54 of the Iowa Code.

On February 10, 2010, State Auditor David Vaudt released a thorough analysis of Governor Culver's proposed budget. Because he found that it exceeded Iowa's 99 percent spending limitation by approximately $25 million, Auditor Vaudt forwarded his report to Attorney General Tom Miller.

The legislature adjourned on March 30, 2010, after spending taxpayer funds for the upcoming fiscal year, with still no word from the Attorney General. Attorney General Miller did nothing to respond to the eighteen Senators who asked for a legal opinion, or the concerns of the Auditor.

"Iowans need an Attorney General who is hardworking and responsive. If the current Attorney General were a lawyer in private practice his clients would not put up with a four month delay for him to issue a 'non-opinion'. In fact, 18 state Senators are still waiting for a response. The taxpayers have suffered because our Attorney General won't take a stand for us and enforce our law," said Findley.

"The law is clear. Governor Culver has a legal duty to submit a balanced budget to the legislature. The Auditor found that the Governor broke the 99% spending limit by $25 million dollars. The Attorney General issued a murky legal letter when it was too late for corrective action. He has decided to cover for Governor Culver's spending problem. It is time for an Attorney General who will stand up for taxpayers for a change. As your Attorney General I will fight for your rights as taxpayers against big spenders," said Findley.

"Governor Culver and Attorney General Miller may think that $25 million dollars is not worth their attention, but this kind of charge card spending has left us with more government than we can afford. As your Attorney General I would enforce the law and remind the Governor of his legal obligation to submit a balanced budget in accordance with Iowa's laws."
