DEXTER, IA—The Republican nominee for Attorney General, Brenna Findley called upon Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller to address the conflict of interest that has arisen within his office relating to allegations of a pay to play campaign finance scandal with Governor Culver on April 23. To date, the Attorney General has taken no action. Findley issued the following statement:
“Today, new revelations have come to light about the pay to play investigation involving allegations of ‘improper contributions’ made by three people associated with a proposed Fort Dodge casino who reportedly received $25,000 from Peninsula Gaming and then contributed $25,000 to Governor Culver’s campaign.
According to the Des Moines Register, Donn Stanley admitted that Governor Culver had in fact contacted individuals associated with the Fort Dodge casino proposal after it applied for a license, which contradicts Donn Stanley’s earlier statement on behalf of the Culver campaign.
It raises a conflict of interest when one of the Attorney General’s top lieutenants takes a job with the very campaign that is under investigation for pay to play, by the AG’s office. The Attorney General has not addressed the conflict of interested created when one of his top staff, Donn Stanley, took a leave of absence from his senior post in the Attorney General’s office to manage Governor Culver’s political campaign. Now, this top staffer is issuing contradictory statements.
This new contradiction raises some serious questions. Why has it taken the Attorney General so long to address the conflict of interest? According to the AG, he was supposed to have issued a decision last week.
The new revelations also raise questions about whether the integrity of the investigation has been compromised by leaks to the Culver campaign. It is essential to the integrity of the investigation that no information be leaked to those under investigation.
It is shocking and troubling that there is no action by the Attorney General as these allegations continue to surface. Iowans deserve to know what is going on. Iowans deserve an open and transparent political process, free of conflicts of interest.
It is time to clean house and bring a new crew to the Attorney General’s office. As your Attorney General I will bring honesty, openness and integrity to state government.
I will work as your legal watchdog to hold state government accountable. Everyone, including the Governor, are equal before the law.”
