DEXTER, Iowa -- After nearly two weeks of inaction, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, finally responded to Republican Attorney General candidate Brenna Findley's repeated calls for an independent investigation. Findley, who called on Miller to address conflict of interest allegations on both April 23 and May 4, said AG Miller’s actions were too little, too late to reassure Iowans concerned about Governor Culver's emerging pay-to-play campaign finance scandal.
Publicly available information on the Iowa Ethics & Campaign Disclosure Board website indicates the lawyer that the Attorney General has chosen to serve as the special prosecutor to investigate Governor Culver is a donor to Governor Culver’s campaign. Governor Culver announced his exploratory committee for Governor in September of 2005. The lawyer AG Miller handpicked to serve as the special prosecutor to investigate was one of then-candidate Culver’s first donors to his gubernatorial campaign.
“Iowans demand a transparent political process, free of conflicts of interest. AG Miller is continuing his pattern of 'the fox watching the chicken coop' by choosing one of Culver’s donors to serve as the special prosecutor in the pay to play investigation. This situation shows that it is time to clean up this mess and bring a new crew to the Attorney General's office. As your Attorney General I will bring honesty, openness and integrity to state government.”
